Is it covered by insurance or Medicare?

Most medically necessary vein and vascular treatments are covered. We verify benefits beforehand and explain any out-of-pocket costs.

Will I need time off work?

Many procedures are minimally invasive with little to no downtime. Most patients return to normal activities quickly.

Do you offer financing?

Yes — we can discuss payment options and financing solutions to fit your budget.

How soon can I get treated?

Appointments are available quickly at our Shrader location and surrounding clinics. We’ll work to find a time that fits your schedule.

Can I speak with a specialist first?

Absolutely. Book a consultation and our team will help you decide the best next step.

What is the difference between varicose veins and spider veins?

Varicose veins and spider veins are both types of venous insufficiency, but differ in size, appearance, and symptoms. Varicose veins are large, bulging, and twisted blue or purple veins that appear on the legs and can cause aching, swelling, and a feeling of heaviness. They are often a sign of a deeper issue called chronic venous insufficiency. Spider veins are smaller, web-like clusters of red, blue, or purple lines that appear on the skin’s surface and are typically a cosmetic concern, though they can sometimes cause itching or burning.

What are the most common signs I might need to see a vascular surgeon in Richmond?

You should consider a consultation with a vascular surgeon if you experience persistent symptoms such as aching, cramping, or heaviness in your legs, especially after long periods of standing; visible, bulging varicose veins; swelling in the ankles, calves, or feet that worsens throughout the day; burning, throbbing, or itching sensations in your legs; skin discoloration, particularly around the ankles; or sores and ulcers on your legs that are slow to heal. These are common signs of underlying vascular conditions like Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) or Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD).

Are varicose vein treatments painful, and what is the recovery like?

Most modern varicose vein treatments offered at our Richmond-area clinics are minimally invasive and involve very little pain. Procedures like laser ablation and sclerotherapy are performed in-office with local anesthesia. Patients typically describe a mild pulling or heating sensation during the procedure. Recovery is swift, with most individuals returning to work and normal daily activities within 24-48 hours. We encourage walking immediately after treatment, though strenuous exercise should be avoided for about one to two weeks.

What is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) and how is it treated?

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a circulatory condition where narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to your limbs, most commonly the legs. This can cause leg pain when walking (claudication), numbness, or non-healing sores. Treatment depends on the severity and may include lifestyle changes (diet, exercise), medication to improve blood flow, or minimally invasive procedures like angioplasty and stenting to open blocked arteries. Our vascular surgeons in Richmond are experts in diagnosing and managing all stages of PAD.

How does Vascular Surgery Associates determine the best treatment for my vein issues?

Our process begins with a thorough consultation and a diagnostic ultrasound at our Richmond (Shrader Road) facility. This non-invasive imaging allows our board-certified surgeons to map your veins, assess blood flow, and identify the root cause of your symptoms. Based on this detailed evaluation, your medical history, and your personal goals, we create a customized treatment plan. We prioritize the most effective, least invasive option to ensure optimal results and a comfortable patient experience.

Will my insurance or Medicare cover treatment for varicose veins?

Most major insurance plans, including Medicare and Tricare, provide coverage for the treatment of varicose veins when it is deemed medically necessary. A treatment is considered medically necessary if you have documented symptoms like pain, swelling, skin changes, or a history of blood clots. Cosmetic treatments for spider veins are typically not covered. Our administrative team will perform a benefits verification before any procedure and provide a clear estimate of any out-of-pocket costs.
